Zoning into the zodiacs

With the changing times, the belief in astrology, which was earlier perceived as fake science, is now being taken seriously by youngsters.

Astrology and horoscopes have started ruling the social media nowadays with youngsters also showing a keen interest. Gone are the times of uncles and aunties looking through kundlis during weddings or consulting an astrologer before taking up something auspicious, the millennials too have now started believing in them and keenly check the day’s horoscopes in newspapers and calendars before leaving home. Many of the youngsters are also pursuing horoscopes as a serious education choice and have made a career out of it.

Hariharan an astrologer, who has completed masters in astrology and owns an astrology institute, says there has been 60% increase in youngsters seeking astrology courses. “In our institute there are many who are pursuing their college education and are learning astrology part time from here” he said. The youngsters who consult him are mostly seeking information about jobs, higher education abroad or on marriage.

Selvakumar, an MBA graduate, took up an astrology course once he finished his education. “Our ancestors have been talking about this for a long time; I was fascinated by the panchangam which could predict our future. Even the sun rise and sun set are accurately recorded in the panchangam. This is the main reason which made me pursue astrology”, he says.

Annapoorna Abinesh has been practicing tarot card reading since her college days. “Practicing tarot has given me insights to deeper thinking and self awareness. I've always had a passion for astrology and wanted to learn this science since childhood. Once I learnt tarot, I practiced it and loved the way it interpreted the future and was quiet surprised on how things really started happening as predicted”.

Most of her clients are young and many have approached her to learn the art of tarot reading. Though astrology is all about good things there are many who misuse the powers. "There is nothing bad about astrology but people should not use it for wrong causes like black magic or to harm other people. Astrology should help people know their future in advance and help them plan or improvise the situation and not destroy one” she said.

Ganesh Prasad, a 24 year old MBA graduate, was fascinated by the reality behind astrology which his mother used to tell him about. “My mother used to look at these horoscope predictions from television and would tell me things which would correctly happen in my life. I believe that there is a science behind astrology”he says.

However, there are many like Prabha Narashiman too who don’t believe in this concept. “I think our destiny is already carved out and we have to work out our shortcomings — nothing can prevent it,” says the fashion designer, whose husband is an ardent believer in the same.
