Kerala: Seven year old Nayan beats odds with brilliance

Though autistic and mute, he knows 7 languages and solves math problems.

KOLLAM: Nayan, 7, is a genius with extraordinary powers of mind far beyond the reach of ordinary children. However, he is autistic and mute since the age of one- and-a-half years. The attributes of this first standard student of Government LP school, Attingal, defy logic: he has knowledge of eight languages, including Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and Arabic, and grasp of mathematics, physics and philosophy. He solves mathematical problems and writes topics related to life and spirituality though he has not been taught any of these. He has also written poems and articles- without reading a single book.

His latest venture is a four-minute short film 'Silent in mobile' on how the misuse of mobile phones has affected warm relationships. He has written the screenplay and done the title graphics. The boy, who also attends speech therapy at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing in Thiruvananthapuram, says he is inspired by his "sixth sense." He is the son of C.K. Syam and S. Priyanka of 'Chemmarathil Veedu' at SN Puram, Kuttoor in Kollam. Syam is a businessman here. "Nayan, apart from being dumb, has issues with writing as he could not hold his pen properly. We tackled the issue of writing by getting him a laptop through which he could express himself using keystrokes.

“This made his talents bloom as he started writing poems, articles and even topics in philosophy without reading any book," Priyanka told this paper. The doctors who examined him have testified to his knowledge of different languages. When asked how he knows them, he would say, "from God." His reply to the questions on his former birth by the spiritually inclined would be - "I was the bud of a flower in my previous life." Nayan has published a book of his collection of poems and philosophical writings titled 'Journey of my soul.' Nayan shares his knowledge in music saying Hamswadhwani raga is his favourite. He has an elder sister Sivapriya studying in standard IV.
