To New beginnings!
Two years after getting engaged, badminton players Sikki Reddy and Sumeeth Reddy finally tied the knot in a grand wedding ceremony on Saturday night. The newlyweds look all poised for a new beginning. “It is indeed an exciting phase and it has not sunk in yet that we’re married now. We are new to this experience and it’s a surreal feeling,” says Sikki, adding, “After two years of planning, I’m glad that we have finally entered the wedlock.”
Meanwhile, Sumeet quips, “My friends are saying that I still have time to run away,” adding, “Marriage is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It was quite an emotional moment.”
As wedding gifts, Sumeet presented her with a ring while Sikki gifted him an iPhone. “What I like about him the most is how he takes care of me,” shares Sikki while Sumeet adds, “I like the way she carries herself; she’s always approachable.”
When asked about how she prepared herself for a married life, the Arjuna award winner said, “I have known my in-laws for over 10 years now and have been frequenting their house. They’re very chilled out. Both our families have a background in sports,” adding, “I know a little bit of cooking. I cook dal, omelet, bhurji, etc. Hopefully, I can manage.”
Apparently, the couple wants to get back to working quickly. “I have to start preparing for the All England Badminton 2019 next month. I guess honeymoon can wait,” shares Sikki.
While the couple has played against each other in mixed doubles earlier, there is a possibility that the couple may team up in the future.
Sumeet explains, “We will train together, yes, but currently we cannot be a mixed doubles team because our focus areas are different. Perhaps in 2020, there’s a possibility based on our respective strengths, so we’ll see how it works out then. What’s most important, however, is winning a medal for the country.”
The couple’s love story makes for a typical Bollywood film. Apparently, Sumeet proposed to her during a badminton camp. “I was in class VIII and he was in class X. Even my parents found out about it. But when I rejected his proposal, he stopped talking to me,” Sikki recalls. “Later, when I suffered an injury, he started talking to me again. His concern for me through that trying phase was what attracted me to him. He continued to propose but I still took my time. Eventually, he stopped answering my calls and started hanging out with other girls, and to be frank, that made me very jealous(smiles). I finally accepted his proposal when I was in graduation,” she quips.
