Your chore values, not app-efficient
Outsourcing services is common in the city — If you need a plumber, a mechanic or a guy to wash your car, apps created exclusively for these services have made it super simple for Bengalureans. It truly is the age of the one-touch wonder, but with solutions being just a tap away, youngsters find themselves to be increasingly dependent on an external source to get their work done.
The increased dependency had changed how we work or think even. The first step would be to seek help from an app. Anantha C, a software professional says, “Being dependent on apps to get my work done felt a lot like spoon-feeding. I would like to believe that I am capable of getting stuff done without relying completely on a person or an app. Once I needed help fixing my refrigerator, but found that online websites suggestions were of little use as they were priced exorbitantly. I asked around at a few local shops, and located a reliable mechanic who helped me at an appropriate rate. Another time when I needed my house painted, I was able to get a better job done when I asked around for local painters who are readily available.”
Swearing off websites that of course are beneficial is a conscious choice for these youngsters as the point is to be self-reliant when it's easy to choose the easy way out. Robin S, a city-based techie loves taking the time out during weekends to wash his own car or tend to chores. “I almost never call up a plumber or electrician if my house needs fixing. I’ve noticed that I’m a lot more aware about how certain things function, for example, if there’s a water shortage and you need to not just call up a tablet service but also identify the problem. If it requires technical assistance, I do call up a professional for help. I think, it’s important that you know the nitty-gritties of housekeeping as you live there and it only makes sense that you should. I derive satisfaction from being able to get on my hands and knees and solving the problem.”
The upkeep of home or garden should be a personal affair. These residents tell us that hands-on effort requires time and energy. Roshan Varghese, a senior infrastructure consultant opines, “Learning a skill is always a satisfactory experience. It does take time and effort to fix these small things and I prefer to do it by myself when I have the adequate time and know-how. Most of the time if I apply mind I can find a simple solution.”
