Dance all the way

Poorna Hariharan, a budding Bharathanatyam dancer, is glad to perform in her hometown Thiruvananthapuram.

For Poorna Hariharan, a young Bharathanatyam dancer who hails from Thiruvananthapuram and is currently settled in Bengaluru, dance has been a passion ever since her childhood days. This persuaded her to learn dance from Nadanabhushanam Vinayachandran and Carnatic music from Chitra Suresh from a very young age itself. It was Poorna’s unabated love towards the art form that, even amid the pressure to earn a B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and thereafter the busy work schedule, helped her go ahead and pursue advanced dance training under the tutelage of P. Praveen Kumar, director of Chithkala School of Dance, Bengaluru. The dancer is overwhelmed that she would be performing in her hometown as part of an event presented by the dance school, her first solo recital along with her guru, who would be heading the musical ensemble.

Praveen Kumar, a renowned dancer and guru from Bengaluru, is performing in Thiruvananthapuram for the first time. The event titled Nruthyollasa, according to the organisers, is an expression of the inner joy of dance and a dedication to the community of art lovers, enthusiasts and patrons of Bharathanatyam in Thiruvananthapuram. It’s a celebration of joy that art brings. The performance that will take place on Sunday at 6 pm at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan will be in the form of a traditional Bharathanatyam repertoire (margam). Mohiniyattam exponent Dr. Neena Prasad will be the guest of honour for the event.

Poorna was an active participant every year in school youth festivals and has bagged prizes and accolades for her performances in various competitions within the state. In addition to the academic degree, she also completed Master of Fine Arts, Bharathanatyam from Tamil University in 2017. Poorna has been a part of many performances choreographed by her guru and dance productions of prominent dance companies like Vyuti and Nrityarutya. Having performed in various venues in Kerala as well as other states, Poorna hopes to continue learning, understanding and exploring the art form.
