Amit Shah To Attend 73rd Plenary Session Of North Eastern Council In Shillong

NEC task forces will discuss about how the Northeast as a whole represents a potential market for tourism.

Guwahati : Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma who heads a high-level task force on Northeast tourism said that union home minister Amit Shah would be attending the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) scheduled on June 4.

Informing that various task forces set up by the ministry would also be presenting their vision for the development of northeast, Mr Sangma said that he will present the task force report before the delegation. He would deliberate on the strengths and weaknesses of Northeast tourism, while suggesting ways to strengthen it and package the region as a tourism destination. “I will chair the task force on tourism and we will be presenting tomorrow. We will be talking about how the Northeast as a whole represents a potential market for tourism,” said Mr Sangma.

The NEC has formed task forces for various sectors that include youth, infrastructure and trade and deliberations would be held during the plenary session which would be chaired by union home minister, Amit Shah.

Union minister for development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, chief ministers, Governors and top officials of all the eight northeastern states would also be present in the meeting.

“I expect we will have diverse consultation and participation on major sectors. DONER Minister had put up a task force for different sectors for the North East and wants states to work together,” Mr Sangma said.

In his presentation Mr Sangma is likely to highlight the individual tourism potentials of states and emphasise the advantages of packaging the region as a whole rather than having states work on their tourism sector individually.

It is significant that the tourism sector in Meghalaya is booming over the years and some of the success stories from Meghalaya and also different states would possibly be portrayed during the presentation for tailor-made replication in other states.

Efforts would also focus on addressing core sectoral weaknesses in some of the states, particularly communication, infrastructure, trained manpower and funding.

Meanwhile, after the NEC plenary, union health minister JP Nadda is also expected to visit the state capital on June 5 and union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman later this month.
