Assam: IPS Officer Shiladitya Chetia Dies by Suicide After Wife's Death Due to Cancer
Guwahati: In a tragic incident a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shiladitya Chetia, serving as the home and political department's secretary in the Assam government, committed suicide soon after he heard about his wife's death in the hospital.
Mr Chetia, who was on leave, took the extreme step inside the hospital where his wife passed away after her prolonged illness on Tuesday. His wife had been suffering from cancer.
According to the state's police, he took the extreme step soon after he heard about his wife's death in the hospital.
Assam DGP GP Singh in a social media post said, “In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time.”
Meanwhile, senior police officers were rushed to the hospital.
Security sources said that they are looking into the entire circumstances as Mr. Chetia is said to have been carrying his service revolver by which he is believed to have committed suicide.
The state government sources said that Mr Chetia, a 2009 Indian Police Service officer, was on leave for the past four months, presumably dealing with personal issues related to his wife’s cancer.
