Centre does not want to control Waqf Boards: Nadda

Nadda emphasised that the government’s aim is to ensure that the properties and funds managed by the Waqf Boards are used solely for community benefit

New Delhi: BJP president J.P. Nadda asserted that the Centre's objective is not to control Waqf Boards but to ensure they function according to the law, so that their assets are devoted to advancing education, healthcare, and employment within the Muslim community. His comments came during an event at the BJP headquarters marking the party's 45th foundation day.

“We are only asking those operating the Waqf Boards to follow the rules. You will have to do it as per rules,” Nadda stated, drawing comparisons with Turkey and other Muslim countries where governments have assumed control of Waqf properties.

Nadda emphasised that the government’s aim is to ensure that the properties and funds managed by the Waqf Boards are used solely for community benefit. “Our goal is to ensure that those managing the Waqf Board operate within the bounds of the law and adhere to established rules. The properties and funds of the Waqf Board will be dedicated to promoting education, providing healthcare and employment opportunities for the Muslim community,” he said.

The event, which saw Nadda hoist the BJP flag at the headquarters, was attended by several party leaders, including MPs and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Revisiting the BJP's political journey since the days of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, Nadda highlighted the party's growth and ideological consistency. “Today, we have 240 members in the Lok Sabha, more than 98 in Rajya Sabha, and over 1,600 MLAs across the country. Our membership now exceeds 13.5 crore, with more than 10 lakh active party workers,” he noted.

Nadda described the expansion of the party as both an art and a science, remarking that even his opponents acknowledge the BJP's strength. He also pointed to several key government actions, including the construction of a “magnificent” Ram temple in Ayodhya during the BJP's tenure, the abolition of triple talaq under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the provision of citizenship rights for those facing religious persecution in Pakistan.

“Our aim has always been to put the nation first and to promote India's traditions, culture, and history,” Nadda said, adding that decisive actions in cases like the Shah Bano dispute have set the BJP apart from previous governments. He concluded by asserting that the BJP remains committed to shedding the colonial mindset and championing national pride.
