Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday warned of strong action against non-governmental organisations allegedly involved in religious conversions using foreign funds. He said the government has received inputs suggesting some NGOs, which receive overseas financing under health and education projects, have been misusing these funds for converting people in certain parts of the state.
Announcing a probe in coordination with Central agencies, Sai stated that any organisation found coercing citizens into changing their faith would face severe consequences. “We respect all religions and the right of people to practice them, but attempts to create unrest in society through forced conversions will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that the exact source and utilisation of foreign money would be thoroughly investigated.
Sources indicated that the state government is considering legislation in the upcoming budget session to curb such activities. Thirteen FIRs have been registered in various police stations over the last 11 months related to alleged incidents of religious conversions. The ruling BJP made this issue central to its 2023 poll campaign in tribal-dominated Bastar and Sarguja, winning 14 Assembly seats across these regions.
