New Year's Eve in Hyderabad Sees Over 3,200 Drunk Driving Cases
Hyderabad: Over 3,200 cases of drunk driving marred New Year celebrations, with incidents reported in Hyderabad, Rachakonda, and Cyberabad police commissionerates.
The special drive, spanning Hyderabad commissionerate registered 1,500 cases), Rachakonda commissionerate registered 517 cases, and Cyberabad registered 1,241 cases, included checkpoint setups and breathalyzer tests from 8 p.m. on December 31 to 6:00 a.m. on January 1.
Cyberabad Police booked 1,241 individuals, involving 938 two-wheelers and 275 four-wheelers, with age distribution revealing 382 cases in the 18-25 age group, 536 in the 26-36 age group, and 239 in the 35-45 age group.
Notably, 196 individuals had a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) count above 50, surpassing the permissible limit of 30 micrograms/100 ml of blood. The police recorded BAC counts between 51-99 for 485 persons, 100-149 for 281 individuals, 150-199 for 128 cases, 200-299 for 100 people, and 300-500 for 51 cases.
Among Cyberabad's 15 police stations, Miyapur reported the highest cases at 263, followed by Kukatpally police station with 123 cases. Drunk driving, classified under section 185 of the M.V. Act, attracts a penalty of Rs 10,000 and/or 6 months imprisonment, accompanied by a driving license suspension for 3 months or more, and in certain cases, permanent suspension.
