Girl student injured in acid attack near Salem
Salem: A girl student suffered serious burn injuries on her hand after a jewellery unit worker flung acid at her near Salem on Thursday.
The 24-year-old worker Nallathambi from Perumal Karadu area near Salem was in love with the Plus-2 girl studying at a local government school. He used to pester her everyday with proposal for marriage but she kept declining his overtures, police said.
Irked by his attitude, the girl reportedly chided him recently. Nallathambi, however, in retaliation, waited in front of her school with a bottle of acid and splurged the liquid on seeing her, causing severe burn injuries to her hand.
Rescued immediately by passersby, the victim was admitted to the Salem government hospital for treatment. Based on a complaint from the girl's parents, Kondalampatti police have registered a case under section 226 (A) and 354 D of IPC.
The youth was arrested on Thursday and was sent to judicial remand. Further investigations are on.
