Hyderabad: Parents accuse Gitam of criminal cover-up

HC asks cops to exhume body for another postmortem.

Hyderabad: A family has alleged that officials of the Gitam University’s Vizag girls’ hostel manipulated the death of their daughter to make it a suicide. Parents said the evidence they have indicates doctoring of facts.

The FIR states the girl died at 5 pm on February 12 but her Facebook account was active at 5.24 pm. The suicide note is not in her handwriting, they said. The parents approached the HC which directed the Cyberabad police commissioner to exh-ume the body for postmortem.

The girl, T. Shriya Prasad, 19, was studying BTech IT second year. Fhriya’s mother Yovnne Prasad said, “On February 12, I spoke to Shriya at 12.40 pm. She spoke about her NCC exam and sounded fine.

At 5.31 pm I received a call from Gitam Hostel chief wardan Sita Mahalakshmi saying my daughter was serious and asked for her local guardian’s number. I called her back at 5.35 pm to ask about my daughter. She said she had committed suicide and was found dead in hostel Kokila Sadan room number 225. The hostel authorities found a letter saying ‘Miss u 2maro darling’, but when we checked it with an handwriting expert it was found not to be Shriya’s. The FIR states she died at 5 pm but her FB account shows she was on chat with her Bengaluru friend at 5.24 pm.”

Shriya's father T.N.R. Prasad added, “Going by the position in which Shriya was found hanging it cannot be said that she committed suicide. She seldom complained of money going missing from her bag in the room. On February 8 she had a fight with her two roommates and she complained of one girl who scolded her for accusing them of theft.

The fingerprints on the chair were removed before we got to the hostel. No forensic investigation was done and the FIR says that the police were called at 7 pm on February 12. Why was the police informed two hours late. The police went by the warden’s report.” Chief warden Sita Mahalakshmi said, "I was in our office. The university handed over the body to the police.”

Shirya’s body reached Hyderabad on February 13 and was buried at a cemetery in Ammu-guda. Police commissioner C.V. Anand said, “We received the HC order on Monday and I directed the Malkajgiri DCP to go by it. He will monitor proceedings.”

Vishakapatnam police commissioner Amit Garh said the local police is carrying out investigation and that he cannot comment as the matter is in court.
