Newborn dies at Karimnagar MCHC, family protests 'doctors' negligence'
KARIMNAGAR: Tension prevailed at the Mother and Child Health Care Centre (MCHC) here when the parents of a newborn, along with their relatives, staged a protest blaming the doctors for the death of the infant during delivery in Karminagar district on Tuesday.
Gogulakonda Swetha, a resident of Bhupalpatnam village in Choppadandi mandal, was admitted at the MCHC when she was in labour on Monday morning.
By Monday night, she gave birth to a baby boy through normal delivery. After the delivery, the infant was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation as it was said to be suffering from breathing problem, according to the doctors. The baby was put on oxygen support in the ICU.
On Tuesday morning, the doctors handed over the infant to the relatives suggesting that it be shifted to another hospital for better treatment as the health condition turned critical.
The parents and relatives of the infant were shocked on noticing that the baby had already lost life. Further, they also observed injuries on its back and around the neck and one of the hands was also broken. When they questioned about the injuries, the doctors failed to give a proper answer. Angered over this, the parents and relatives of the infant staged a protest before the hospital.
They alleged that the negligence of the doctors while performing the delivery could have led to the injuries and subsequent death of the infant. To cover up the issue, the doctors said that the baby was suffering from breathing problem and shifted it to the ICU, they said.
The family members and the relatives demanded that strict action be taken against the doctors responsible for the death of the infant.
