Chennai: A duo on a sports bike snatched a 10 sovereign gold chain from a 38-year-old woman in JJ Nagar on Friday evening. The sequence of events caught on a CCTV camera on Thiruvallur Road in JJ Nagar shows the duo on a Yamaha R15 bike fleeing after snatching the chain from the woman.
The victim, Sumitra, is a resident of JJ Nagar and runs a mobile phone accessories store there, police sources said. On Friday evening, around 3 pm, she was walking back home with her five-year-old daughter after picking her up from her school in the same locality when the incident happened.
The duo who appear to be in their early 20s, trail the woman and her daughter on their bike and taking her by surprise, the pillion rider grabs the chain from the back as the rider speeds up. “The woman made futile attempts to hold on to her chain,” a police officer said. The duo made their escape even as the woman let out a scream and a few onlookers rushed to her aid.
J J Nagar police rushed to the scene and began investigations and procured the CCTV footage from a shop nearby. The woman suffered minor injuries, police said. A case has been registered and a hunt is on for the bike-borne duo. Police said that the faces of the two men are clearly visible and they have secured the registration number of the bike. “We have also passed on the grabs from the footage to other police stations to identify the duo,” a police officer said.
