Rape cases double up in Thiruvananthapuram limits
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The rape cases registered in the city have doubled this year, the State Crime Records Bureau data shows. While police stations in the city limits recorded 42 cases in 2015, they registered 45 cases until July 2016 alone. The rural area recorded 129 cases in 2015, and the figure was 78 this year. They attribute this to more cases of child victims registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
While DCP G. Sivavikram could not interpret data, he said POSCO cases are on the rise. “Children are the victims in five out of six rape cases came to me in the past one month. We can’t confirm from statistics that incidents of rape are rising. Maybe more cases are getting reported due to the work of Childline and increased awareness,” he said.
As always, the capital district tops in rapes with 123 cases until July. The most populated Malappuram with 106 cases is the only other district that crossed the three digit mark in six months. Apart from this, around 452 molestation cases were registered in the capital district, and the count is four times higher than the second on the list, Malappuram.
