Salem corporation officer goes missing

SALEM: In an unusual development, a Salem corporation officer has reportedly gone missing along with her husband and son in the wake of a row with her daughter-in-law, prompting the police to launch an investigation.

According to police, Ranganayaki, 56, wife of Mohan, hailing from DGR Nagar in Seelanaikenpatti near Salem has been working as assistant commissioner in Salem city municipal corporation. Her husband Mohan is working in a textile showroom, while their son Giridharan, a techie working in Hosur lives there with his wife Prema and their one-year-old son.

Few days ago, Giridharan visited his parents with his wife and son, when daughter-in-law had a row with Ranganayaki. Police said both exchanged heated words, drawing Prema's parents also into the family spat.

Few days ago, Ranganayaki sent a message to her sister Vijayaselvi in Sankagiri through WhatsApp, in which she threatened to commit suicide along with her husband and son. She also sent letters to the Salem corporation commissioner and various higher officials by courier, on her suicide plan.

In a WhatsApp video, Giridharan said he and his parents were vexed over his wife's harassment and decided to commit suicide. He also sought to take legal action against his wife. On receiving the message, Vijayaselvi rushed to her sister's home in Salem and was shocked to find the trio missing.

Following a complaint, Annathanapatti police registered a case and have launched investigation. Through her bank transaction data obtained, police found Ranganayaki withdrew Rs 30,000 at an ATM in Mysuru on May 31. Police have launched a search for the missing official at Mysuru, Hosur, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Further investigation is on.
