Andhra Pradesh: Protests after girl ends life due to harassment
Khammam: Chapa Krishna Priyanka, pursuing her BCom second year in Bhadrachalam, succumbed to her suicide attempt on Monday. She died while undergoing treatment at a government hospital. Tension prevailed in Sattupalli as the police did not allow her family to take her body back to Bhadrachalam. Priyanka’s family alleged that the suicide was the result of her college lecturer’s harassment, and were planning to take the body to Bhadrachalam to stage dharna in front of the college.
At one stage, the family agreed to take the body to her native village Lingalapalli in Dammapet mandal where she had consumed pesticide. On the way, they tried to go towards Bhadrachalam. Upon realising this, the Sattupalli police alerted the Mulakalapalli police and the ambulance was intercepted at Jagannatapuram and sent back to Lingalapalli.
Priyanka’s father, Mr Chapa Subba Rao, said his daughter had come to Lingalapalli to see her ailing mother. She was reluctant to return to college, Mr Rao said. Priyanka consumed pesticide on Saturday and died while undergoing treatment on Monday. He said that she wrote in a diary that the lecturer was harassing her. That particular page was not present in the diary, though impressions of some letters were seen on the next page. A case is registered under CrPC Section 174 (inquiry into suicide).
