Hyderabad: Woman assaulted while returning home

Poorly lit areas add to the woes of female techies

Hyderabad: A 10-minute walk for female techies working in the IT Corridor in the city has not just become difficult, but has also turned into a nightmare as vagabonds take advantage of the deserted, poorly lit areas and abuse them.In a recent incident at Madhapur, a female techie working in Verizon India Pvt Ltd was molested on the road by four strangers when she was returning to her hostel.

Two days after receiving the complaint, the Madhapur police have failed to make any progress. They say that the CCTV cameras installed in the area were not pointing towards the scene of the crime. The incident occurred near her office at Mindspace IT Park, and is a ten-minute walk from her hostel.

The woman complained to the police stating: “On July 30, after finishing work, I started walking to my hostel. The incident took place between 8.45 pm and 8.55 pm behind Mindspace. When I reached the road near HUDA Park, in Vittal Rao Nagar, two unknown persons on a bike attacked me from the rear. They spanked me while two others were making fun.”

As the area was not well-lit, the woman could not see the faces of the accused and they escaped. Based on a complaint, the Madhapur police registered a case under Section 509 of IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).

Madhapur sub-inspector B. Ravi Kumar told this newspaper: “Yes, we received a complaint from a female techie that some strangers spanked her. We checked the CCTV footage, but the cameras were not pointing towards the crime scene.”

Responding to a query, the S-I said, “The woman did not suspect anyone. We are investigating to find the accused and an analysis of the footage of other cameras in the vicinity is on.”

It may be recalled that in a similar incident at Gachibowli, a BPO employee was nabbed for spanking women techies from the rear while walking on the road. The accused N. Anirudh was involved in three such incidents during the early hours of the day, as the roads were deserted during that time.
