Hyderabad: Cases against public servants spiked in 2022
Hyderabad: Cases against public servants saw an annual spike of 29 per cent in 2022, with 107 cases registered in all, as per the ‘Crime In India 2022’ report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Monday.
One of the cases that garnered much public attention was the rape of a woman at her residence in Hastinapuram of Vanasthalipuram by former Maredpally station house officer K. Nageswara Rao, in July 2022. A chargesheet was filed and it is pending trial.
According to the NCRB report, the majority of the cases pertained to graft and corruption, registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, generally employed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
As many as 72 persons were booked in entrapment cases, 18 were booked for possessing disproportionate assets and 17 others were booked for criminal misconduct.
Overall, 361 cases are pending investigation from 2022, with the cumulative total from previous years taking the number to 917. Also, 997 cases are pending trial, with chargesheets filed only in 97 and final reports filed only in two instances, as of 2022-end. It stated that only eight cases resulted in convictions, while 17 others were disposed of by courts.
