HYDERABAD: Malothu Hussain, 55, a murder convict, lodged in the prisoners’ agricultural colony on the Cherlapally Central Prison campus, escaped early on Thursday. He was serving a sentence of rigorous imprisonment for life. The High Court confirmed the sentence.
Hussain was deputed to the kitchen and woke up at 4.30 am with the others who were on the cooking details. At about 7 am, he did not turn up for breakfast and the prison staff started searching for him.
When they didn’t find him, T. Kalasagar, superintendent of prisons, filed a complaint with the Kushaiguda police.
Sources said prisoners in the agricultural colony are allowed to move freely. They are deputed to work in the fields, and petrol pumps and are not under constant surveillance. The prison has a fence but it is not guarded.
Sources said Hussain had killed his friend who refused to give him money. Hussain was convicted and lodged at Warangal Central Prison in 2015. After the Warangal prison was demolished, he was shifted to Cherlapally in June 2021.
Police said he had gone on parole and returned on time. The last time he went out on parole was on January 2 for 30 days and surrendered on February 2. In the prison, he was known for his good conduct. After assessing his conduct, he was transferred to the agricultural village.
