Kochi: Ernakulam excise special squad officials on Sunday seized 54 Nitrazepam tablets and 70 grams of ganja from a 21-year old at Perumbadappu.
According to officials, the arrested Abin Antony, a native of Perumbadappu, was the customer and the person who brought the contraband ran away leaving him before the excise sleuths.
When the excise vehicle reached the spot, they saw Abin running towards the jeep and another person running away from the spot. He had given weird answers to the questions which made the detection of the contraband easy for the sleuths. "He said he was carrying medicines for his friend. But his friend ran away from the spot without taking the medicines from him," an official said. The contraband was seized after checking the cover.
Excise has registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act that entails rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years with fine of Rs. 1 lakh. The sleuths are on the lookout for the second accused Arun George, a native of Mattancherry.
