TIRUNELVELI: A moneylender against whom a complaint of usury was lodged with the Tiruneveli district collector couple of weeks ago by a daily wager, was detained under the ‘Goondas Act’ here on Friday. The detainee, Gomath Sankar son of Subramaniya Pandian of Sundarapandiyapuram near Tenkasi in Tiruneveli district was complained to have tortured a daily wager, Kutty @ Sudalaiyandi (38) son of Muthaiah of the same village demanding exorbitant interest for the Rs 2,000 Sudalayandi had borrowed, five months ago. Gomathi Sankar too was reported to have grabbed the moped from Sudalayandi for the interest amount and attacked him, severely injuring the daily wager n his stomach.
Based on the police investigation in connection with this complaint of Sudalayandi, the district collector, Sandeep Nanduri recommended the immediate detention of the usurer, Gomathi Sankar under ‘Goondas Act’. Based on a similar usury complaint, unlicensed money ender, Erenimoos of Samiyarmadam in Kanyakumari distrct was arrested by the Kanyakumari district police. Erenimoos was alleged to have forced many of the borrowers in the Samiyarmadam area and occupied their houses in return for the money he had lent.
