'Harassment' From Shop Owner Leads to Suicide by Four Members of Family

KAKINADA: New information has emerged about the suicide of four members of a family hailing from Mandapeta in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on Dec 7.

The four members -- Kondababu, his wife Lavanya and his two sons Rajesh and Jayaraj -- ended their lives after leaving a three- page suicide note written by Rajesh, one of the deceased.

Rajesh was working in an auto consultancy shop and he unauthorisedly took and used Rs 6 lakh for his individual needs. "A group of three -- shop owner Pentagatla Prasad, a worker in the company Ramireddy Veeralakshmi of Tapeswaram, and a politically influential person and sweetmeat stall owner Mallibabu of Mandapeta -- forcibly took signs from Rajesh and his family members in 40 bond papers and 40 white papers and procured 20 signed blank cheques" from Rajesh, it was stated in the suicide note.

As per Rajesh's version in the suicide note, he and the family members borrowed some money, sold their gold ornaments and paid Rs 5 lakh to the owner Prasad. After this, they sought the signed bond papers, white papers and blank cheques. The shop owner told them he would give them these after an hour.

After an hour, when they asked for the papers, the three people refused to give them these papers and claimed that they did not get the Rs 5, Rajesh alleged.

“The politically influential person told us that he belongs to ruling the YSRC and that he would ask the circle inspector to book a case against me and the other family members and that we would be jailed,” Rajesh said in the suicide note.

“Following this, we, the four family members, left the place, toured holy places in Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Haridwar and Varanasi. All our money is exhausted, we are unable to continue our lives, we are ending our lives,” Rajesh wrote in the suicide letter.

He requested the government to arrange their funerals in Varanasi.

Meanwhile, Ramachandrapuram DSP Prasad told Deccan Chronicle that no complaint had been filed with the police station in Mandapeta so far and the case was being investigated by Varanasi police as the incident took place there
