Chennai: A day after the Saidapet court refused to remand coordinator of May 17 Movement, Thirumurugan Gandhi in connection with a cybercrime case, the police managed to get remand order against the activist in another case and sent him to Vellore central prison.
Thirumurugan Gandhi was arrested by cybercrime police on Thursday night when he arrived at Bengaluru airport for his recent speech on Thoothukudi firings in UNHRC that has been circulated in social media. However, the XI Metropolitan Magistrate in Saidapet refused to remand him and rebuked the police action of arresting him.
The magistrate ordered a 24-hour custody for interrogation. But the police released him on Friday evening and arrested again only a few minutes later in connection with another case. “He was arrested for conducting an agitation against the government in Royapettah in 2017,” the police said.
He was again produced before XVII Metropolitan Magistrate in Saidapet late Friday, where Thirumurugan Gandhi was ordered a 15-day judicial remand until August 24. The police lodged him in Puzhal prison initially and shifted him to Vellore central prison on security grounds, the police sources said.
