IT girl student ends life; third suicide in less than two years
ANANTAPUR: A final-year engineering girl student committed suicide in his hostel room at Idupulapaya IIIT in YSR district on Monday, police said.
Akhila, 23, a native of Rajampet in Annamayya district, was found dead in the early hours of the day. Her roommates informed the warden and others about the suicide. Institute director Sandhya Rani and administrative officer Jilani called in the police. This was the third suicide in the IIIT in recent times.
Police went and collected information from the students. The reasons behind the suicide were yet to be ascertained and the body was shifted to Pulivendula hospital for post-mortem, police said.
Some three suicides were reported during the past one-and-a-half year in Idupulapaya IIIT, where some 6,000 students are studying.
An IIT claimed that the suicide of Akhila was likely related to her family’s denial of a proposal for her marriage with a relative. “There is no pressure on students from the college management,” these sources stressed.
IIIT Idupulapaya director Sandhya Rani admitted, “Two of our students died by suicide recently due to personal problems. One of them clearly mentioned this in his suicide note. Both the students were doing well in their academics as their GPA scores were good. We have a team of professional counsellors apart from regular faculty members to counsel the students. We will initiate more steps to prevent such incidents on our campus.”
