Three drown in Ilapur Cheruvu
Hyderabad: A 38-year-old woman, her teenage daughter and her brother drowned in the Ilapur Cheruvu in Ameenpur on Sunday. Two public-spirited persons jumped into the lake to rescue them but their efforts went in vain.
Police said that the woman, Alakunta Yadamma, was washing clothes on the lake bund when her daughter Lavanya, 15, fell into a deep part of the lake and began drowning. Upon noticing this, Yadamma rushed to her daughter’s help but began drowning herself.
Locals in the area, alerted by their cries for help, informed her husband Janumaiah who rushed to the place and called the police. Meanwhile, upon noticing his sister trying to save Lavanya, Yadamma’s brother, Usuraiah, 40, jumped into the water to help, but drowned.
“Janumaiah came to check on his family when the area locals, who were trying to rescue the victims, informed him. After his call, a police team, along with a unit from the civic body, went to the spot,” police said.
Two men near the lake who saw the family struggling in the water jumped in to rescue them. They were unsuccessful, and they could not also locate the bodies.
Police and civic officials deployed divers who found Lavanya’s body in the afternoon and the bodies of Yadamma and Usuraiah in the evening, police said. The bodies were later shifted to a government hospital for postmortem examination.
