Controversy Over Alleged Gang Rape of Dalit woman
Anantapur: A controversy has erupted over the alleged gang rape of a Dalit woman from East Kodipalli village. She has accused Kalyandurg Rural police station of not reacting despite she submitting a complaint over the incident on August 10.
She alleges that five persons of the village have been molesting her for past one year and blackmailing her with nude videos.
Several organisations have taken to social media, accusing YSRC men of raping the woman. They further accused police of supporting the rapists, instead of doing justice.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Anantapur SP K. Srinivasa Rao ruled out the possibility of the Dalit woman being gang raped, saying she has changed her version twice.
The SP maintained that there is no evidence of gang rape or videos and photographs as being alleged by the victim. He said her allegations appear to be provoked by a group of people in the village for selfish motives and gaining political mileage.
Srinivasa Rao said action will be initiated against those provoking and making false allegations.
He disclosed that police had received a phone call from villagers on August 10 that the woman was with a man in a house. The villagers had locked up the doors and alerted police. Kalyandurg Rural police reached the spot, opened the doors and accommodated the woman with her relatives that night for her safety.
A case had been registered based on her complaint on August 10 itself. But she arrived at the SP’s office on August 14, alleging that she had been gang raped by five persons in the village.
The SP said Kalyandurg DSP has been asked to probe the issue from all angles, including the allegations made by the woman.
