8 rebels killed in Kothagudem

First major encounter after Telangana state was formed.

Khammam: Eight members of the CPI (ML) Chandra Pulla Reddy Bata faction were killed by the police in an alleged encounter in the Melamadugu forest area, in Tekulapalli mandal of Kothagudem in the early hours of Thursday.

The outfit, which emerged six months ago, was wiped out in the police firing. This is the first major encounter after the emergence of Telangana as a separate state.

According to the police, a police party which was conducting a combing operation, noticed the group members wearing olive green dress moving in the area and ordered them to surrender. Police sources claim that the members opened fire on the police, who fired back. The exchange of fire lasted for half an hour. After it ended, police recovered eight bodies. They also seized an SLR, seven rifles and revolutionary books from the site.

All were below the age of 35 years and had previously worked for other parties. No one, including the media was allowed into the area where the firing took place.

The bodies were shifted to Kothagudem for a postmortem. Bhadradri Kothagudem district SP Amber Kishore Jha said that the group had resorted to various crimes in three districts.

The deceased have been identified as Ettu Kumar aka Rakhi of Marrigudem in Paloncha mandal; Azad of Mangapet in Bhupa-lapalli district; Lunavat Arjun from Sarapaka village in Bhadradri district; Om Prakash Siddaellaram in Mahb-ubabad district; Sitam Naresh of Gundala in Bhadradri district; K. Madhu of Gundala, Rafiq of Kamballapalli in Mahbubabad district and Ganugula Srinu of Koyyagudem in Tekulapalli mandal.
