No arrests in reckless driving case
HYDERABAD: More than 24 hours after a woman was run over while two cars were allegedly racing at Narsingi of Cyberabad commissionerate on the city outskirts, the drivers of two vehicles are yet to be nabbed.
Police have identified the owners of the vehicles and deputed teams to trace the drivers, who are suspected to be students of a reputed business school located on the city outskirts.
Meanwhile, family members of the victim Chakali Shantamma, relatives and Mirzaguda villagers staged a protest at the spot which continued till midnight on Tuesday, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
The woman’s husband Chakali Narsimhulu continues to be in the hospital for treatment. The incident happened when the couple was returning home after attending a relative’s funeral in Shankarpally.
The first car with the number TS 13ES 3669 hit the couple on the scooter from the rear, is registered in the name of Ayyarapu Satyanarayana of Langar Houz and the second car with the number TS 07HR 2279, that run over Shantamma as she fell from the scooter, is registered in the name of Sheri Venkata Narasimha Reddy of Shri Narayana Poultry Associates at Rajendranagar.
Drivers of two vehicles who saw the couple lying with bleeding injuries, fled from the place, even before villagers gathered at the spot.
Angered by this, the villagers, joined by the victims’ families and relatives, staged a protest and objected to shifting the body from the spot.
They retreated only after cops assured them to take strict action against the drivers. The protest resulted in blocking vehicular traffic for around 5 km on the busy stretch.
Narsingi Inspector V. Shiva Kumar that they are also verifying if the two drivers were drunk at the time of the incident. “Prima facie from examination of the two cars, it looks as if they were not drunk. However, after nabbing them, we would inquire into this aspect as well,” he added.
