Bid to pay photocopied Rs 2,000 notes lands shopper in police net

In the evening, Mani again visited the shop and took out another Rs 2,000 note and tried to buy paint

Chennai: The city police arrested a 45-year-old conman who had tried to buy paint from a paint shop with a colour-photocopied Rs 2,000 note, on Tuesday. The arrested person was identified as S. Mani (45) of Jani Jhan Khan road in Royapettah.

According to the police, Mani had allegedly gone to a paint and hardware shop on Dr Besant Road owned by A. Mohammed Nasir (55) on Tuesday morning. “Mani paid for the paint with a Rs 2,000 note and received change,” the police said.

In the evening, Mani again visited the shop and took out another Rs 2,000 note and tried to buy paint. This raised a suspicion in Nasir’s mind and he informed the Ice House police station. The police rushed to the spot and interrogated Mani and found that the currency notes were fake. “Mani had given another photocopy of the same Rs 2,000 note. Both the photocopies had the similar serial number,” the police said. Mani was arrested and sent to judicial remand.
