A 19-year-old girl seeking medical attention at Chittoor Government Hospital for abdominal pain gave birth to a baby girl inside the hospital bathroom. The teenager, who identified herself as Akhila, thereafter vanished, leaving the newborn behind.
Sources said Akhila, a man and a woman arrived at the government hospital around 3.30 am on Wednesday. After examining her, the duty doctor directed her to an adjacent building for further evaluation. Her examination there got delayed in violation of the protocol. Akhila remained unattended and began experiencing pelvic pain.
“Without any medical assistance, Akhila gave birth to a baby girl within the confines of the hospital bathroom. However, without seeking further help, she abandoned her kid in the bathroom and left the hospital,” the duty doctor told reporters.
Other people who entered the bathroom saw the newborn covered in blood. They alerted the hospital staff, who retrieved the abandoned child and provided necessary medical care. They put her in the hospital’s ventilator for specialised attention. The baby is now doing well, hospital staff said.
Hospital authorities have filed a complaint against Akhila for abandoning her child. Police have registered a case and are verifying the CCTV footage at the hospital to identify the mother and the duo who accompanied her. They are also probing possible negligence of the hospital staff.
