Kerala rape and murder case: Advocate P Rajan to defend accused
Kochi: It was a surprise for advocate P. Rajan when the Perumbavur magistrate asked his consent to appear for the accused in the Jisha murder case. Being an experienced lawyer and a true professional, Rajan readily accepted the challenge and expressed his willingness to defend Ameerul Islam.
“I am a professional lawyer. I will have to abide by the law and what the magistrate says. It was the court which appointed me and so I will do justice to the profession and defend the accused,” Rajan told Deccan Chronicle. Rajan, a native of Perumbavur, said that he was not aware of the case details and was yet to talk to the police for the details.
Even Rajan couldn't get a glimpse of the accused when the cops produced him before the court. “Both the court room and the complex premises were jam-packed. Several lawyers turned up at the court in the evening to have a look at the accused,” Rajan said.
First Class Judicial Magistrate V. Manju appointed Rajan after considering that Ameerul Islam was not in a position to hire a lawyer. If the accused expresses helplessness to hire a lawyer, the court appoints an advocate of its choice so that the accused will get proper legal aid.
