Cyber-fraud: OU students, staff lose money

HYDERABAD: Around 150 students and staff from Osmania University have fallen prey to a cyber-fraud, with each losing approximately Rs 50,000, which overall comes to a staggering Rs 75 lakh.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, art student Azar Ali Khan said "A friend of mine was earning Rs 2,000 each day through an app called ‘Seven Eleven’.

The app promised substantial returns for just an hour’s work in a day. After enrolling, I also received good returns. However, they stopped coming after the fourth week. I discovered that I had lost around Rs 48,000.

Having faced similar experiences, the ‘victims’ urged officials to take precautionary measures.

Mustaffa, a staffer, said that he and his friend had overall lost around Rs40 lakh.

“I had followed instructions to invite people through WhatsApp. Over a period of time, the app stopped working and I realised that I was duped,” he lamented.

Cyber expert Anil Rachamalla said "There has been an alarming rise in cybercrimes across domains, including phishing, identity theft, social engineering crimes, investment frauds, loan apps, and more. We have been actively educating the public through various means.

It's important to remember that money doesn't come easily. If your monthly pay packet after nine hours of toil every day is around Rs 50,000, how can you expect to earn Rs 2,000 for one-hour work? One should exercise caution before taking such decisions."
