Pakistani hackers try to steal phone data of Indian users
Hyderabad: Hackers, believed to be from Pakistan, are trying to steal data from mobile phones to access bank accounts. Similar threats were detected in 2012, when Pakistani hackers made calls to Indian mobile phone users. Their mobile number's country code was +92 (Pakistan). Following circulars to all telecom operators by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, all mobile operators alerted their customers not to respond to calls from numbers starting with +92, +90 and +09.
Hackers used to access details of the target to clone SIM cards. Hackers from Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries have again adopted similar techniques, particularly after the recent Army action against terror camps. Hyderabad cyber crime wing ACP K.C.S. Raghuveer said one such case was reported recently in the city but the loss was not huge. “Hackers stole '1 lakh from the victim’s account and we traced the case,” he said. He advised the public not to respond to phone calls having the country code +92.
“Callers who receive missed calls from a number beginning with +92 must not call back. Hackers who are using VoIP can mask caller ID by adding single digit numbers or fake country codes,” he said.
