4 workers dead, 10 severely hurt in slab collapse at Moinabad work site
Hyderabad: The collapse of a slab at an under-construction function hall in Kanakamamidi of Moinabad left four construction workers dead and 10 others severely injured on Monday morning.
Officials said that the incident took place at the site, located beside a sports complex, around 11.30 am.
“The slab suddenly gave way, trapping workers underneath and causing significant loss of life and injuries. The injured laborers are currently undergoing medical treatment for severe injuries. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the factors contributing to the collapse of the construction slab. The focus is on identifying any lapse in safety measures and construction protocols that might have led to this incident,” said Moinabad police inspector Venkat Ranga.
GHMC director (vigilance) Prakash Reddy said: “It is a grave tragedy. We are taking all necessary steps to investigate the cause of the collapse and ensure accountability. Three of them died on the spot while the fourth person died on the way to the hospital.”
Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had to be deployed for the rescue efforts, with specialised equipment used to facilitate the movement of workers and remove the collapsed structure.
Construction workers at the site were left shocked.
“All of us hail from Bihar and West Bengal. There were 24 of us working inside and it happened so suddenly. In one moment, everything came crashing down. There was dust everywhere, and we could hear screams,” a worker at the site said.
Another labourer said there were challenges faced during the rescue operation. “We tried to help our colleagues as much as we could, but the debris was heavy. It was a chaotic scene, and we are devastated by the loss of our friends,” the labourer said.
GHMC officials said they are coordinating efforts with relevant authorities to investigate the root cause of the incident and take necessary action.
