Police Intervention Foils Escape Attempt: Former Student Overpowered by School Staff and Residents

Thiruvananthapuram: A reign of terror prevailed at a school in Thrissur district of Kerala on Tuesday when a former student entered the premises with a gun and threatened the teachers.

The incident took place at Vivekodayam Boys Higher Secondary School in the city when the former student identified as Jagan, entered the staff room, moved into the classroom and fired three shots towards the roof. All this while he was repeatedly shouting “you people have ruined my future.”

With the school authorities alerting the local police, a vehicle carrying cops arrived at the institution. During this period, Jagan climbed onto the first floor of the building and jumped down. He tried to flee the campus but the school staff and residents who had gathered there overpowered him and handed him over to the police team.

The police said the youth was a drug abuser and often reacted violently.

The gun used by the youth was examined by ballistic experts. It was Baby Air Pistol 177, worth Rs 1,500 and was purchased by Jagan on September 28 from Trichur Gun Bazar in Ariyangadi. According to his statement, he bought the gun using the money he had collected from his father on several occasions.

The youth was subjected to a medical examination. His parents told the police that the boy had been undergoing treatment for mental health issues since 2020.

According to a teacher at Vidyodayam School, Jagan was a student who dropped out of school midway. He attended school for a year in 2021. Then he didn't come to school.
