Disha app saves woman from rapists
Nellore: Nellore police rescued a woman after she sent them an SOS via Disha app late on Sunday night. They arrested three persons on charges of attempting to rape the woman belonging to Nellore at a beach resort near Tummalapenta of Kavali.
According to Kavali Rural circle inspector M. Rajesh, one of the accused had befriended the victim sometime back. He took her to the beach resort on Sunday to spend the night with her.
But without her knowledge, he also invited his two friends to the resort. They attempted to rape her even as she pleaded with them. However, they assaulted and threatened to kill her if she failed to cooperate with them.
Under the pretext of using the restroom, the woman pressed the SOS button in the Disha app on her mobile phone. However, she could not answer the call when police control room called back immediately, since the accused were around.
As she failed to answer, control room staff called the alternative number she had given while downloading the Disha app to check the whereabouts of the victim. The receiver of the call, who is a friend of the woman, immediately called her. When she took his call, police traced her location.
CI Rajesh said they received information through Disha app at midnight 1:19 a.m. They rushed to the resort within minutes and rescued the victim. They also arrested the accused Avula Prasad, Konduru Venkateswarlu and Katamgari Sankaraiah of Kavali Rural mandal.
Nellore district superintendent of police Ch. Vijaya Rao presented rewards to Kavali Rural CI, ASI K. Sivaiah and constables V. Murali and S. Rajesh Babu on Tuesday for rescuing the woman.
Vijaya Rao advised women to download the Disha app and register it properly with all details. The SP said they are able to prevent such crimes from happening due to strong implementation of the beat system throughout the district.
