Hyderabad: Overall Crime Rate Down Marginally in City
Hyderabad: The city has seen a slight two per cent rise in overall crimes reported during 2023. However, grave bodily crimes, which include attempt to murder and those involving weapons, shot up by 39 per cent while crimes against women rose by 12 per cent.
“Vodily crime cases — which are minor in nature, including quarrels, petty cases of assault — have gone up by 16 per cent. Most of them were reported during the election period,” said Hyderabad police commissioner K. Sreenivasa Reddy while presenting the city’s annual crime report for 2023, here on Friday.
He said that the city was peaceful all through the year and all festivals were celebrated in an orderly manner. He said the police would be friendly to law-abiding citizens and get tough with law breakers.
Reddy attributed the rise in crimes against women to increased tech avenues. Pocso cases, where minors are the targets, have come down by 12 per cent. “Women safety remains our priority. Enforcement against drug abuse and illicit trafficking will also be intensified in coordination with related agencies,” he added.
For the New Year celebrations, he said all spaces hosting the celebrations should close by 1 am on January 1. “If drugs are used, the organisers will be subject to legal action and their spaces will be sealed,” he added.
