Home secretary directed to look into crime rise in Tamil Nadu
Madurai: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Home secretary to consider the PIL seeking to prevent the increasing crime incidents in Tamil Nadu.
RK Baskar (49) from Madurai filed a PIL in a division bench comprising Justice A.Selvam and N.Authinathan contending that the crime incidents including thefts, chain snatching, robbery, murder, contract killing and murder for gain have increased in the state.
Though police filed FIRs on these criminal cases, they failed to nab the criminals involved. The police were also not taking action against the contract killers who have nexus with politicians, he claimed.
Alleging caste favouritism in dealing with criminals, the petitioner said that some police officials were not registering cases against criminals after they learn about their caste background.
This has only resulted in increasing crime rates in the state, claimed the petitioner. He also pointed out the recent murder of a student in Madurai.
Baskar sought of the court a direction to the Chief Secretary to issue necessary instructions to the home secretary and Director General of Police to take stringent action against criminals and thereby reduce the crime rates in the state.
After recording his submission, the court directed the Home secretary to consider the petition.
