Salem: Two youth tragically drowned while taking a dip in Cauvery River during the Maha Pushkaram festival in Erode district on Sunday.

Police said B Kaviarasan, a weaver and R Ramesh, a college student, both aged 19, from Kakapalayam drowned while bathing at the river in Bhavani Kooduthurai, the final day of the five day festival. Over two lakh people thronged the river ghat, which also lead to severe traffic snarls in the area.
On receiving information, the fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies of the youth from the river and sent them for post-mortem at Erode Government hospital. The Chithode police have registered a case and further enquiries are on.
