Intelligence officials get threat calls from Hyderabad

The calls were made using call routing equipment to prevent identification of callers.

Hyderabad: Some people from Hyderabad threatened senior Intelligence officials and those working in other Central agencies. The calls were made using call routing equipment to prevent identification of callers.

The detective department had received requests from internal security agencies to track down the callers. The callers seemed to be using independent VoIP routers, which make it difficult to track them. Police suspect many call routing rackets are active in city.

“We received requests from security agencies regarding abusive calls. When the officers try to call back the numbers the calls are not going through, which indicated the callers are using VoIP routers. An initial probe indicated the calls were being made from Hyderabad. Now we are trying to pinpoint their locations,” said a senior CCS official.

As per rules, calls coming through international telecom service providers should be routed through licenced telecom service providers in India. But, the racketeers use their own equipment and route it through illegal gateways. Since the gateways can’t be intercepted by security agencies, it also poses a national security threat. Even though free Internet video calls are now possible the rackets are still going on.
