Kerala: 3 held, 60 kg ganja seized in major narcotic haul
MALAPPURAM: In a major narcotic haul in the district, the special police team seized 60 kg of ganja smuggled from Andhra Pradesh and arrested three persons on Monday at Venniyoor near Tirurangadi. The arrested were identified as Akhil, 23, native of Rajakka in Idukki, Nagadevi, 22, and Srinivas from Reddypetta in Andhra.
The accused were trapped in a covert operation by the special police team which visited Andhra and struck a deal with the drug mafia posing as drug peddlers from Kerala. The police said that all the arrested were part of a network which is active in distributing ganja across the state.
The police netted the accused as per the leads given by the accused in recent major drug cases in Areekode and Manjeri. The police team led by Manjeri SI Jaleel K. met Akhil posing as peddler and demanded the contraband.
Akhil was an agent who links the local peddlers with ganja mafia in Andhra. The accused were on their way to deliver the contraband ordered by the police investigation team when they were caught by the police at Venniyur on Sunday evening.
Malappuram DySP Jaleel Thottathil said the police have got more information on persons involved in drug peddling in the district by questioning the trio.
During the past three months alone the district police has arrested 22 persons including women and a former Indian Air Force staffer and seized various types of contrabands worth crores of rupees.
