Vijayawada: Eight persons were arrested by the police on charges of assault on a minor girl and her family members at Phirangipuram in Guntur district on Monday night.
According to Phirangipuram police, family members of the girl hailing from Phirangipuram fixed the marriage for her. However, a youth identified as Manikanta claimed that he was in love with the girl and wanted to marry her. This caused trouble for her and for her family members.
Elders of both the families held a meeting to resolve the issue. The girl informed them that she wanted to marry the man proposed by her family. Enraged at this, heated arguments erupted between the two families.
The youth along with other family members allegedly assaulted the girl and her family members, with sticks and stones. This resulted in injuries to 12 persons and they were treated at the area hospital in Narasaraopet and later at the general hospital in Guntur.
Police booked a case and took up investigation. Eight persons were arrested while the remaining are at large.
