Rowdy held for harassing girl student, threatening family

According to an FIR filed by the police, Bhatia also had threatened members of girl's family and made their lives miserable.

Belagavi: A 30-year-old man was arrested by the police on charges of eve-teasing a young sportswoman from the city and a case has been registered against him.

The arrested has been identified as Navjyoth Singh Bhatia, a resident of Shahpur and a rowdy sheeter.

He was regularly eve-teasing the girl, an MBA student and a talented hockey player, besides abusing her family members.

Fed up with all this the girl's mother lodged a complaint with Belagavi police.

For the last several months, Bhatia was chasing and stalking the girl at her college and at her locality. Often, he would also abuse her family members.

The girl had even stopped going to college for some time, unable to stand the harassment.

On Monday, Bhatia verbally abused the girl in front of her house, which angered her brother. When her family questioned him, Bhatia attacked the girl's brother.

According to an FIR filed by the police, Bhatia also had threatened members of girl's family and made their lives miserable.

The girl's family met DCP Amarnath Reddy to lodge a complaint, after none of the officials at local police stations took their complaint seriously.

The family urged the DCP to provide them security. Only after the DCP took up the matter the police officials of Khadebazaar Police Station lodged an FIR against Bhatia and arrested him.

According to DCP, the girl's family was living in fear due to Bhatia's harassment for the past few months.

He said Bhatia was involved in some robberies at various parts of Belagavi.

The investigating officer has been asked by DCP to open the rowdy-sheet of Bhatia to ensure that he faced stringent action.

Meanwhile Bhatia’s father threatened media persons and photographers when they tried to enter the police station.

He objected to photographers taking his son’s photo and threatened them.
