Chain snatching cop caught after filmy chase
Hyderabad: Two youngsters, Abdul Kareem and Anurag, while on an evening walk at the GHMC park in Kothaguda, heard a woman shouting for help.
What followed was a filmi chase that lasted 3 km to catch a chain snatcher, who had made good with the woman’s gold chain. To their utter shock, the snatcher turned out to be a constable.
Gachibowli police arrested Kantu Ramesh, constable with Telangana State Special Police (TSSP)'s Kondapur battalion, and recovered the nine-tola gold chain valued at Rs 3.9 lakh.
On Monday evening, the victim had come to the park for an evening walk. The accused spotted her alone, snatched her chain and escaped.
Even as the woman shouted for help, Kareem saw a man running past him. Alerted by the woman’s screams he ran to catch the snatcher.
"He left the park and ran into some bylanes nearby. Another walker joined me in the chase, and we succeeded in catching him,” Kareem told Deccan Chronicle. “We almost missed him but saw a person moving suspiciously and approached him. He was gasping for breath and not answering our questions.”
They caught him and called the police. “He claimed that he was a cop," said Kareem, an engineer from Guntur district who is in the city to learn professional courses.
Police took Ramesh into custody. During questioning, he pleaded guilty. Police found that he was a 'deserter' from the TSSP.
