Accused in 99.7% Rape Cases Known to the Victims
HYDERABAD: Close family members and known members were reported as accused in 99.7 per cent of rape cases in 2023 in the state.
Out of the 2,284 rape cases reported in the year, only in six cases were the accused not known to the victim. In 69.18 per cent cases, the victims were trapped with the promise of marriage, 13.44 per cent were neighbours, colleagues and employers, while 6.44 per cent were relatives and other family members of the victim.
Shikha Goel, head of the Telangana Women Safety Wing told Deccan Chronicle that women should be more careful and watch out for betrayal of trust.
“They should be very cautious while in relationships and with people they interact with. They must not trust anyone too quickly,” she added.
Goel said that they have been concentrating on following up court trials in order to ensure that the accused are convicted. The role of Bharosa centres has been path-breaking in this regard, as they follow up with victims of rape and POCSO till the case reaches its logical conclusion, she said.
Meanwhile, SHE teams registered 850 cases and 4,586 petty cases in 2023. The police counselled 2,146 persons, including 180 minors.
