Abandoned newborn case unveils mother's mental health struggle
Tirupati: Investigation into the case of a 19-year-old mother, who on August 16 delivered her baby girl in the toilet of Chittoor Government Hospital, has unveiled a web of complexities surrounding the teen mother Akhila, including her mental health.
Akhila, who had come to the hospital in Chittoor around 3:30 a.m. complaining of abdominal pain along with a man and woman, had been asked by duty doctors to give her urine sample for tests. She went to the toilet for the purpose and ended up delivering a premature girl. In a shocking turn of events, she left the newborn in the toilet and vanished from the scene unnoticed.
Following a complaint lodged by hospital authorities, circle inspector K. Maddaiahchary and team launched an investigation, starting with examining the CCTV footage. The probe led to identification of Akhila and her husband Mahesh, both belonging to Bangarupalem mandal, who work as daily wagers.
Police questioning revealed that Akhila had earlier too given birth to another girl. The prospect of raising a second daughter overwhelmed her and her family, leading to their tragic decision to abandon the newborn.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, inspector Maddaiahchary said, “Akhila had been struggling with mental instability, wherein she was not even aware of her second pregnancy. Her family members took her to Chittoor hospital after she complained of stomach discomfort. The woman's family members were also unaware of her second pregnancy."
The abandoned child is currently receiving care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Ruia hospital in Tirupati.
Police are following up with medical professionals and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) personnel while continuing their investigation. The inspector said they will take appropriate action taking into consideration Akhila's mental health.
"We will take measures to ensure the well-being of both Akhila and her child," he affirmed.
