NEET-UG Paper Leak: CBI Arrests 5; Conducts Multiple Searches

The agency has arrested three individuals from Jaipur, one from Gurugram, and one from Nashik, while several other suspects are being questioned in various cities and may be arrested later

NEW DELHI: The CBI arrested five persons from Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra in connection with the alleged NEET UG paper leak case, officials said on Wednesday. Three of the accused were arrested from Jaipur, one from Gurugram and one from Nashik. Several other suspects are being questioned in different cities and may be arrested later, officials said.

Among those arrested is Shubham Khairnar, 30, of Nashik. He is being brought to New Delhi for questioning after a local magistrate granted the CBI transit remand. Nashik police had detained him on Tuesday on a request from Rajasthan police.
After taking over the probe on Tuesday, the CBI searched multiple locations across the country based on fresh leads. It seized digital devices, including mobile phones and laptops, from the suspects. The devices will be sent for forensic examination to trace messaging applications allegedly used to circulate the examination papers, officials said.
Sources said the CBI is coordinating with the Special Operations Group of Rajasthan police, which had conducted a preliminary enquiry into the case.
The CBI on Wednesday visited the National Testing Agency headquarters to collect documents related to the NEET UG examination, which was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak. The team also spoke to officials involved in the examination process.
The agency had registered an FIR and formed teams to probe the alleged leak, which led to the cancellation of the paper held on May 3.
The NEET UG 2026 examination was conducted across 551 Indian cities and 14 overseas centres. Nearly 23 lakh candidates had registered for the test conducted by the NTA.
According to the NTA, information on alleged malpractice was received on the evening of May 7, four days after the examination. The inputs were sent to Central agencies the next morning for “independent verification and necessary action”.
The Rajasthan police SOG claimed that a “guess paper” for chemistry, allegedly circulated among students before the examination, had about 410 questions, including nearly 120 that appeared in the test.
