Noble food drive: People serve the homeless
Chennai: In a massive food drive conducted by Food Bank, people from different walks of life fed home-cooked food to pavement dwellers around Marina beach on Sunday evening.
Many individuals and families from across Chennai, including children, volunteered to cook, collect, and distribute food to the homeless. “We collected around 691 food packets, and over 54 volunteers came together to distribute the food. Those who can’t provide food, they help distribution and some do both,” said founder, Sneha Ramadoss, whose idea gave birth to the Food Bank.
The idea of a Food Bank was propagated on. From its inception in Chennai, the bank concept and volunteers spread across India, to cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi. Now people across the cities help collect and distribute food in the respective cities to those who don’t get to eat one proper meal in a day.
“We came to know about this and have been serving people in our neighborhood ever since. There are so many coming together to contribute to the underprivileged ones,” said Gunwanti Jain, a volunteer .
As around 700 people were fed, the joy on their faces was visible. A little girl rushed to hug a volunteer and thank her for the food. “This was one way we felt we could give back to the society,” said a software professional.
