Andhra Pradesh: Transport authorities work to curb mishaps

From rumble strips to repairing of potholes, work is on.

Rajahmundry: Road transport authorities have come up with a series of initiatives to bring down the increasing number of road accidents on national and state highways in West Godavari. The district administration has directed the national highway authority of India to set up rumble strips just 200 meters away from junctions. The strips cause a series of light bumps and alert drivers to be more cautious and reduce speed while crossing junctions.

The NHAI authorities are also taking up the curing of potholes. But repair works have been hampered due to a lack of funds. The district authorities have also identified as many as eight accident prone sites all the way from Sidhantham bridge to Peravali and have set up caution boards advising drivers to drive carefully. Locations have been marked as accident prone based on certain parameters such as lack of adequate illumination, faulty road engineering, junctions leading to several roads, etc. The R&B and panchayat raj authorities have also been asked to set up speed breakers at places where their roads join the national highway.

A good number of road accidents are occurring when vehicles enter the highway without noticing fast-approaching traffic. Municipalities and panchayat raj authorities have also been asked to set up bus bays and 146 places have been set apart for the stops. West Godavari DTC S. Satyanarayana Murthy said: “We, along with the district administration, have been initiating a series of measures to control the road accidents and we are going to implement all proposed steps very shortly keeping in mind public safety.”
